Filipino veteran Frankie Minoza is hoping a pro-am round with revered boxer Manny Pacquiao will leave him fighting fit in his bid to claim a third title at this week’s ICTSI Philippine Open.

The 52-year-old Minoza, who won Asia’s oldest Open in 1998 and 2007, called the WBO welterweight champion an inspiration for his country, still reeling from a deadly tropical storm late last year.

Harrington in a fog over take-off scare

Irish golfer Padraig Harrington says he was unaware of the severity of a take-off scare after his plane shook and then stopped suddenly on the runway at Abu Dhabi last month.

Harrington was on an Etihad Airways plane as it taxied down the runway prior to take-off on January 30, when the passengers felt a sharp jolt and then the aircraft, with more than 200 people on board, came to a lurching halt.

“We didn’t know anything happened,” said Harrington, who was seated in business class with his caddie. “It was a very foggy night. They aborted take-off.”

1960s stars Beach Boys to appear at the Grammys

The Beach Boys, icons of 1960s California pop-rock, will reunite at the Grammy Awards ceremony, organizers said Wednesday.

The surviving band members — Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks — are also releasing a new album and heading out on tour to mark their 50th anniversary.

Group members “have not performed together live in more than two decades,” the Recording Academy, the group that organizes the event, said in a statement.

The Beach Boys will perform along with two Grammy nominees, Foster The People and Maroon 5, organizers said.

Spain raises 4bn euros in surprise bond sale

Spain raised four billion euros ($5.3 billion) in a surprise issue of 10-year bonds on Wednesday, more than the two to three billion it had originally intended, the treasury said.

The syndicated bond issue received strong demand of more than 7.8 billion euros with the bonds placed at an average rate of return for investors of 5.403 percent, the treasury said in a statement.

The volume of demand and the interest of investors outside Spain, who bought 80 percent of the bonds issued, “demonstrates the improvement of confidence in the solvency of the Spanish economy,” it said.

Cuche says million euro lure won’t change plans

Swiss downhill specialist Didier Cuche said Wednesday a million-euro offer to remain in alpine skiing one more year won’t change his plans to retire at the end of the season.

Reports from Switzerland claimed Tuesday that the chief of his ski sponsor Head had offered him one million euros if he extended his career by a season and won the famed Kitzbuehel downhill for a sixth time.

Cuche, however, said the offer, reported in Blick newspaper, would not sway him from retiring in March 2012.

AVIATION: A380 fleet to be checked for further wing cracks

FRANCE: More cancellations as French airline strike continues
