Spectre of ousted Australian PM haunts election

Australia’s government has denied Kevin Rudd was behind damaging cabinet-level leaks, as the former prime minister’s hurried sacking haunted campaigning for next month’s polls.

Treasurer Wayne Swan described Rudd as “honourable” after media speculation pointed to the former leader over damning allegations against his replacement, Julia Gillard.

“I do believe that he’s an honourable person,” Swan told public broadcaster ABC late on Wednesday.
